General Studies in Music

Concentration in Music (BA)

Why Study Music?

If you would like to explore as many options as possible, the general studies concentration is for you. You’ll study on your chosen instrument or voice, take core courses like music theory and music history, while also having the opportunity to complete a variety of electives in other disciplines. Another available option would be to choose from a wide array of additional specialized courses in music such as conducting, jazz history, arranging or songwriting. You’ll be prepared to apply for graduate programs or to begin your career in a variety of fields in music.

Alumni Success

Alum Marta Johnson (Lettofsky) C’98 earned her BA in music with a focus in piano and has made a career as a pianist, coach, and conductor. She has worked for the Lyric Opera of Chicago/OperaKids Program, Light Opera Works, Emerald City Theater, and Chicago Opera Theater for Teens. Marta went on to earn a master of music in collaborative arts from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.

Double Major

A BA in music is easily paired with a second major to prepare you for your ideal career. For example, a double major in music and business or nonprofit management will give you the music knowledge and business acumen you need to work in the music industry. Other complementary majors could include theatre, media studies, history, creative writing, or psychology.

Certificate in Music for Social Change and Human Values

Music’s eight-semester-hour undergraduate certificate program is available to all music majors. Learn to teach young students how to play stringed instruments in an orchestra setting, using El Sistema-inspired techniques.
