Why Study Fine Art?

As one of the concentrations in the art major at ºÚÁϳԹÏ, fine arts combines art history with learning different art forms, like drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and more. You can use these skills to pursue a career as a professional artist, teacher, curator, nonprofit worker, and more.

Faculty Spotlight: Nnenna Okore

Nnenna Okore’s abstract sculptures incorporate a variety of media and objects. Her focus on environmental art has taken her to her home country of Nigeria for a year as a Fulbright Scholar, teaching and creating art alongside local artists and students.

Chicago: An Artist’s City

Some of the world’s most renowned art museums are just a train ride away. The city of Chicago offers many internship opportunities, evocative public art installations and architectural styles, access to professional artists, and a range of gallery and museum field experiences.

Graduate Study

Recent graduates have pursued master of fine arts (MFA) degrees at Washington University, University of Illinois, Indiana University, Pratt School of Art, New York Academy of Art, and University of New Mexico.

Alumni Profile

Art Department faculty encouraged Danny Bracken C’05 to follow his interests and think about art in new ways. He’s now making a living as an artist, expressing himself through visual art, music, and gallery installations.

Junior Critique

During your junior year, you will receive direct feedback on your work to date from faculty and your peers, plus mentoring on how to focus your efforts going forward. Throughout your time at ºÚÁϳԹÏ, faculty will take this type of vested interest in you and your goals.

Senior Show: Professional Portfolio

Senior art majors who concentrate in fine arts participate in the Senior Show during their final semester. You’ll create an artist’s statement and cohesive body of work. You will professionally display your work publicly in the Carlson Tower Art Gallery. This will become part of your portfolio in your job search.
