Recreation and Sports

General Information and Rules

Intramural (IM) teams are formed by groups of friends, staff, faculty, and students for each sport. The IM information board in Helwig Recreation Center (next to the east stairwell) and campus announcements are used to announce specific dates for each IM sport. Read the “free agent” information below for an option to get involved if you don’t have a team.

Participants

All North Park students, faculty, and staff are allowed to participate. Viking athletes may only play in sports that they do not also compete in at the collegiate level (e.g., football players cannot play flag football, volleyball players cannot join an IM volleyball team). In addition, athletes that are in-season may not participate in an IM sport, unless special permission is given by his or her coach. Spouses of seminary students and resident directors living in campus housing may participate, but must purchase a Helwig spouse membership to do so (please see the for details).

IM Rules

All intramural participants are responsible for reading and understanding the IM handbook. A copy will given to each team captain, and is available to any student who requests it from the IM supervisor. Rules for each sport will also be distributed to team captains.

Team Captain Communication

Much of the success of an intramural program is dependent on communication! Each team captain must remain in contact during the season with IM staff members and teammates. Team captains are responsible for relaying all information about playing times, schedules, and emails to teammates, as well as ensuring that rosters are complete with correct telephone numbers and email addresses. Team captains will be held responsible for failing to relay important information to their teams.

Free Agents

IM teams are formed by participants, not by the intramural staff. Use the Free Agents List to connect with other players or teams. Individuals interested in participating in a particular sport, but who don’t yet have a partner or team to join, can list themselves as Free Agents. Captains of established teams use the list to complete their teams. The Free Agents List will be available at the team captains’ meetings; Free Agents should attend the captains’ meetings in order to connect with open teams.

Schedule Information

Schedules and other pertinent information will be passed out at the team captains’ meetings. All participants can view schedules on the information board in Helwig.

Rosters and Registration

Team captains must fill out and turn in a roster card to register their team in an IM league. Roster cards are available in Helwig. These cards also indicate the times your team is available to play so that league schedules can be built. Players can be added during the first two weeks of an IM season; after this “roster lock date” only players listed on an IM roster are eligible to complete in the playoffs, should the team make it.
