Transfer Credit Into CC

ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï accepts transfer credit from previous college work completed by a student. The following is a set of preliminary conditions that must be met in order to be considered for academic credit at CC:

Transfer Credit Guidelines

  • All transfer credit must come from a regionally accredited, degree-granting college or university (including community colleges), or a program preapproved by the CC Center for Global Education and Field Study that can provide an official, school of record transcript. Coursework taken online follow these same standards. 
  • An official, school of record transcript must be provided for any and all course/credit considerations.
  • ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï will not accept credit from non-accredited institutions or from any off-campus or study abroad program that cannot supply an official, school of record transcript.
  • ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï will not award credit for prior learning experience that has or cannot been recorded on an official, school of record transcript from an accredited institution.
  • If taken before graduating from secondary school (HS), a letter from the school must accompany the transcript stating that the credit was above and beyond and was not needed to fulfill any graduation requirements (CC does not accept dual enrollment)
  • Students must be able to produce course descriptions/syllabi for all course considerations. 
  • Courses must be substantially similar to CC courses (following the Liberal Arts model) and cannot duplicate, overlap or regress from previous work
  • A letter grade of "C-" or higher is required to earn transfer credit. 'D+' and below will not earn transfer credit at CC. Courses for which a Pass or Satisfactory was earned at another college will earn credit at CC ONLY if the college can provide verification that the student passed with a letter grade of "C-" or higher. Grades from transfer courses will neither be recorded on the transcript, nor included in CC's grade point average.

Students who meet the conditions outlined above should continue to review the additional transfer credit guidelines below before ordering their official transcript from the accredited institution or approved program. If students have AP, IB, and/or GCE A-Level Exams, please review our AP | IB | GCE Credit Guidelines below for eligibility criteria. 

The College can apply a maximum of 8.00 CC units (sophomore standing) in total transfer credit to students admitted as a first-year student and 16.00 CC units (junior standing) in total transfer credit to students admitted as a transfer student. Review Academic Residence Requirements (see section VII under GenEds / section VIII under All-College)

One CC unit is equivalent to 4 semester hours, or 6 quarter hours. Courses that are less than 4 semester hours (or 6 quarter hours) may not earn more credit than what was awarded by the granting institution but may still meet GE designations based on course content.

The College can apply a maximum of 8.00 CC units (sophomore standing) in total transfer credit to students admitted as a first-year student. Students who enter CC as a first-semester, first-year student must complete 24 units at CC or CC programs and exchanges (including ACM semester programs).

The College can apply a maximum of 16.00 CC units (junior standing) in total transfer credit to students admitted as a transfer student (see Information for New Transfer Students below). Students who enter CCas a transfer student must complete a minimum of 16 units at CC or CC programs and exchanges (including ACM semester programs).

The maximum transfer credit allowed per semester is 5.75 CC units. This amount is based on the maximum potential of credit earned on campus, including cases that were given overload permissions.

Student who meet the transfer credit guidelines and are ready to have their official transcripts sent to ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï may do so by either sending their transcripts through mail or having them sent electronically. Please make sure you are sending your final transcript from the approved program or institution (all grades have been posted) to avoid any delays in evaluating your transcript(s) for credit.

Student who choose to have their transcripts sent through the mail should notify the Registrar's Office as most often these are received without their knowledge in the Admissions Office. You may notify Christine Brett directly at cbrett@coloradocollege.edu

General Education (GE) requirements may be fulfilled with qualifying transfer credit. Students looking to satisfy any GE requirements with their transfer work should send an email to Christine Brett (cbrett@coloradocollege.edu) with the following information: 

  • Provide the course description for the eligible transfer course
  • Specify which GE Requirement is being met
  • If you have not done so already, have your official transcript sent to the Registrar's Office; transfer credit evaluation will not be made without this. 

First-Year, entering students who have received credit from an accredited institution while attending secondary school (high school) MUST provide the following in order to evaluate the course(s) for credit: 

  • If taken before graduation from secondary school, the course must be above and beyond the requirements for their secondary school graduation. Students must submit a letter on letterhead from their secondary school counselor stating that the credit was not needed to fulfill any graduation requirements. This may be either mailed or emailed to CC's Registrar's Office. 
  • The course(s) must be taught on-site at a college or university campus and not on a secondary school campus.
  • The course(s) must be taught by college or university faculty.
  • The course(s) must be substantially similar to a course currently offered by CC.
  • A minimum grade of "C" or its equivalent must be received.
  • Student must be able to produce course descriptions/syllabi for all course considerations.

Students considering to attend another accredited institution while on a College approved or mandatory medical or disciplinary leave of absence (LOA) and seeking to transfer their coursework back to CC must receive approval to do so from the Dean of the College, Pedro de Araujo. CC will not accept transfer credit otherwise from student's on a medical or disciplinary LOA.

Students who are on an academic LOA are not required to obtain pre-approval from the Dean of the College but are strongly encouraged to seek prior review from the Registrar's Office instead. This is to verify credit eligibility and amount to be expected upon submitting the final transcript to CC for the coursework taken while on an academic LOA.

Students are not able to attend courses at another institution during the Fall or Spring semester while simultaneously being enrolled at CC or at an approved study abroad program. A petition to the Dean of the College, Pedro de Araujo, may be considered on rare occasions. If approved, credit transfer may be evaluated by the Registrar's Office but will not be accepted otherwise.

Students considering to attend another accredited institution during extended breaks or over the summer and are seeking to transfer their coursework back to CC are strongly encouraged to receive pre-approval to do so from the Registrar's Office. Students can reach out to Christine Brett (cbrett@coloradocollege.edu) to obtain a preapproval form. This is to verify credit eligibility and amount to be expected upon submitting the final transcript to CC for the coursework taken during an extended break or over the summer.

Students who wish to complete a semester abroad or study away as domestic exchange students must receive approval from the following constituents for all coursework prior to enrolling: 

  • Center for Global Education and Field Study
  • Registrar's Office 
  • Department Chairs or Program Directors (if credit is being used to satisfy major/minor requirements)

All three of these constituents are included when you complete the required Course Approval Form process for credit transfer, through the application to study off-campus in Summit. A Note About Recording Transfer Work from Approved Study Away Programs: All courses attempted on an approved study away program will be recorded on your CC transcript as transfer work regardless of earned credit. This includes courses attempted where credit was earned (student received a C- or better) and courses attempted where credit was not earned (D or F equivalent). As a reminder, transfer work does not get calculated into a student’s GPA.

Once admitted as a CC student, final transcripts should be sent to the Registrar's Office for evaluation of credit and fulfillment of any General Education requirements. A copy of the credit evaluation is facilitated through the Admissions Office and shared with the Student Opportunities and Advising Hub (the Hub) to aid in your conversations with your Hub Advisor when choosing courses for your first semester.

  • Transfer students will have an advisor assigned to them by the Student Opportunities and Advising Hub (the Hub) over the summer for Fall Transfer and over the Fall for Winter Transfers to assist students in planning their schedules. If you would like to talk with someone in the Hub about choosing an advisor, you may contact them at advisinghub@coloradocollege.edu.
  • Fall Transfers' registration will take place using the live registration application in Banner SSB, ADD/DROP. Winter Transfers' registration will be completed on their behalf. Ahead of registration, transfer students should be meeting with their Hub Advisor and using the Stellic platform to plan their courses for their upcoming terms.
    • Encountering prerequisite errors when registering... The registration applications are configured to recognize prerequisites as CC coursework or transferred AP credit only. Transfer students who have met the prerequisite of an upper level course at their former institution will encounter a prerequisite error when registering. To receive the override consent pin and proceed with registration, please send an email request to the instructor of the course; be prepared to send a copy of your transcript(s), course descriptions, and/or syllabi if asked. If approved, the instructor will share their Consent of Instructor PIN (COI PIN) which you may use in ADD/DROP.

A Note About Your CC Student Record: Students can expect their transfer work to post to their CC record by early July for Fall Transfers and early December for Winter Transfers. Be prepared to show a copy of your transcript(s), course descriptions, and course syllabi during registration.

AP | IB | GCE Credit Guidelines

ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï recognizes challenging coursework by giving credit for approved Advanced Placement tests (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) exam scores, the General Certificate of Education advanced-level exams (GCE A-Level, German Abitur, French Baccalaureate exams, and college courses. Credit may be awarded for other advanced placement exams after review by the Registrar. No credit is awarded for CLEP tests or for life experience.

Advanced Standing Credit

Advanced standing credit may accelerate graduation by allowing a student to earn credits from AP, IB, and/or GCE A-Levels towards their 32-unit requirement and may satisfy major requirements with the department's approval.

The College can apply a maximum of 8.00 CC units (sophomore standing) in total transfer credit to students admitted as a first-year student and 16.00 CC units (junior standing) in total transfer credit to students admitted as a transfer student. 

The Registrar's Office will NOT award double credit for the same subject earned through different programs (e.g. AP American Literature and IB American Literature)

Students who have taken the General Certificate of Education advanced-level examination (GCE A-Level) will receive 1 unit (4 semester hours) of credit for each passing grade (A-E).

ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï recognizes the special rigors of the International Baccalaureate Degree program. One unit is equivalent to one block.
